Masters of Science Programs
Once students are enrolled in either the Public Health Nutrition or Nutrition Science concentration, they then have two options: M.S. Thesis or M.S. Non-thesis.
Complete Requirements of the M.S. Thesis and Non-thesis option are provided in the Graduate Handbook.
In the thesis option, a graduate student works closely with a faculty advisor and his or her graduate committee on an original research project. The research project includes developing a proposal, conducting the research project that has been proposed, and documenting the research project by the preparation of a written thesis. The thesis research is generally published in a professional research journal. The graduate student also performs an oral defense of the thesis.
In the non-thesis option, a graduate student must pass a written comprehensive examination which covers all coursework taken toward completion of the degree. The comprehensive exam is developed by the student’s graduate committee. Graduate students in the non-thesis option also must successfully complete a culminating experience as part of the requirements for graduation. Specific examples of culminating experiences include: 1) block field experience with analytical field paper for students in Public Health Nutrition; and 2) research or demonstration project which is closely coordinated with the student’s graduate committee members and major professor and results in a presentation at a scientific or professional seminar and/or a publication quality paper.
Requirements of the Dual MS-MPH are provided in the Graduate Handbook.
A dual degree candidate must satisfy requirements for both the MS (Public Health Nutrition concentration) and the MPH degree. The MS portion of the dual degree can be completed as a thesis or a non-thesis option. The MPH portion is completed as a non-thesis option.
