Research Interests:
Both major forms of Diabetes Mellitus result from an overall decrease in functional beta cell mass. Our lab is currently interested in understanding how the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1-beta and gamma-interferon lead to impairments in glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and proliferation, with the eventual progression to overall losses in beta cell viability. Our long term endeavor is to unravel the transcriptional networks underlying the decline in beta cell mass that leads to the develop of overt Diabetes.
