Rotations and Experiences
DI Rotations/Experiences (30 weeks)
Clinical (12-17 weeks)
1-2 week rotations at various clinics and several of the area hospitals:
- Cardiac
- Cancer
- General Clinical
- Diabetes
- Renal Dialysis
- Pediatrics
- Metabolic Support and Nutrition for Trauma Patients
- Transitional and Long-term Care
- Mini-staff Experience
Community Public Health (5-10 weeks)
Assess and educate clients in various settings, including:
- Health Departments including the WIC Program
- Fitness and Wellness Centers including bariatric programs
- Mobile Meals Site
- UT Ag Campus, EFNEP Program
- Nutrigenomics Practice
Foodservice Management (4 weeks)
Develop, prepare, cost and market specialty menu items, monitor sanitation, conduct in-service at hospital foodservice setting.
Electives (1-2 weeks)
Select experiences in the Knoxville area from the following list:
- Additional experience in Metabolic Support/ Trauma, UT Medical Center
- Additional experience in Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital
- Additional experience with EFNEP Program, UT Ag Campus
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, UT Medical Center
- Inborn Errors of Metabolism, UT Genetics Center
- Knox Co. Schools
- Head Start Program
Personal Choice (2 weeks)
Gain more experience in your areas of interest. Students can plan experiences anywhere in the country under the direction of a RD. Some examples include:
- Sports Nutrition and/or Eating Disorders
- Supermarkets and Food Companies
- Health, Food and Nutrition Magazines
- Clinical, Community Nutrition or Management
Staff Experience for Nutrition Science (5 weeks)
Deepen skills by managing in-patient nutrition care at one of the seven area hospitals.
Staff Experience/Block-Field Experience for Public Health Nutrition (7 weeks)
Those students in the MS-DI with a concentration in Public Health Nutrition or in the dual MS-MPH-DI program will be placed in a 7-week block-field experience the first summer. This provides students with experience in the public health nutrition workforce. This 7 week experience counts as 7 weeks of the Dietetic Internship. The student participates in the selection of this experience which can take place anywhere in the country.
