DI Admission Criteria

Admission Criteria

• Bachelor’s Degree and Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Verification
• Minimum 3.0 grade point average
• GRE (1000 or more desired combined score)
• Work experience in health care, food, or nutrition related area (500 hours or more suggested)

Selection Criteria

There are 13 members on the DI Selection Committee. Members include Clinical Managers or other RDs from the seven area hospitals, plus the Internship Director and other RD faculty in the Department of Nutrition.

A Bachelor’s degree and verification statement from an accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is required. Applications are ranked by each member based on GPA, GRE scores, professional references, letter of application, work experience and leadership activities. A combined GRE score of 1000 or more is desired (but not required). A total of 500 hours of volunteer or paid work experience in health care, food or nutrition is desired (but not required).

Points are given in each area. More points are given for higher grades and GPA as well as stronger recommendations. The letter of application is your opportunity to stand out. Work experience (both paid and volunteer) is evaluated based on quantity, quality and diversity of experience. We also have an area for bonus points where we take into account special circumstances such as being an athlete or president of a club, or family or work situations that may have demanded time away from studies.

Pre-select Option

The DI Program participates in the pre-select option for current UT, Knoxville graduate students. The pre-select option allows the DI Program to select up to four outstanding students for an early decision into the program. Students in all degree programs (MS, MS-MPH and PhD) are eligible.

The complete application package is required as outlined on the website and DI brochure (see DI/MS Applications).

Application deadline is December 1st. Notification of acceptance takes place the 3rd week of January. If a student is not accepted at this early decision it is recommended they apply again by February 1 and participate in D & D digital matching.
