The DI Course

The DI Course, NTR 490, is taken the second fall of the MS Program. This is a 3 credit course which takes the students clinical nutrition background to a deeper level. The course covers the latest research, assessment and counseling strategies for the major disease states including: obesity and bariatric surgery, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, renal disease, gastrointestinal diseases and metabolic support. Additional classes are provided on: sports nutrition, eating disorders, pediatric nutrition, long-term care, food safety and management.

RD preceptors’ are guest speakers at most of these classes. This provides an opportunity for preceptors to contribute to the education of the interns before they are in their clinical settings.

A pharmacist teaches several sections of the class on medications related to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and weight management. He also speaks on drug-nutrient interactions.

Interns will complete several case studies, practice nutrition documentation, and complete several written exams.
